D-51“５周年記念”インタビュー
D-51デビュー５周年の節目に、新しい第一歩の作品『Daisy』には多くのオリジナル曲が収録され、チャゲ＆飛鳥のカバー曲も話題となっている。曲の数だけストーリーがある全14章の小説のような作品で、みんなとも共感できる作品になったと語るD-51の吉田安英と上里優。実体験に基づいたラブソングは、友に応援歌を歌ってあげたいという気持ちが音楽になり、人を励まし、元気を与えて続けている。そんな彼らからのメッセージ集です。
——D-51は今年５周年ということですね。この節目に通算４枚目の新譜『Daisy』もリリースされましたが、この５年間を振り返ってみていかがですか。
吉田安英(YASU)：５年というと数字的には短く感じるかもしれないけど、凄く内容の濃い１年１年でした。もっと長くやっていたように思えるくらい本当にいろんなことがありましたね。でも５年で振り返るにはまだ早いなとも思うんで、まだ先を見ています。
上里優(YU)：僕らは北谷美浜のストリートからはじまって、ちょうど５年の節目で今回のレコ発ライブをまた美浜でやれるというように、ホームグラウンドに帰ってきて歌える場所があるというのは、僕らにとって宝物ですね。
——歌を通じて出来た事とか、伝えたい事って何ですか。
吉田安英：自分たちから(歌で)発信することで、音楽の力というものを感じたなぁというのがすごくあって。
それは前回のインタビューでもお話したんですけど、例えば親子の仲が深まったとか。落ち込んだ日にD-51を聴いたら元気になったとか。
そういう声を聞くと音楽をやって良かったなと思うし、自分たちの発信する音楽がそういうポジションであってほしいと思うし。
またそうやって、ファン、D-51の仲間や輪も出来て、人と人とのいい関係を築くことができたと感じています。
上里優：僕らが作る音楽で励まされたりする事になったりとか、前向きになれるような“きっかけ”になってくれたらと嬉しいですし、また逆に、僕らを好きになってくれた人たちが力をくれたりもするんですね。例えばブログを通じて、逆に僕らが力をもらったりとかいう事もあるんです。だから僕らだけが発しているわけではなくて、お互いにエールを交換しあっているというか、そういういい関係を作れてきているのかなと思いますね。
——今作の『Daisy』では、作詞作曲のオリジナル作品も多く手掛けられたそうですね。
吉田安英：今回アルバムを作る上で大事にしたかったのは、僕ら自身でメロディーも生み出したいという気持ちもすごくあって。前回ベストアルバムを作ったのは“これまでと／これからのD-51”という意味もあって出したんですけど、“これから”ということを考えた時に、やっぱり、すべてを僕ら自身の手で作って１枚のアルバムにしたら、よりオリジナリティーが出るんじゃないかという話からはじまっているんです。
今回、ほとんどの楽曲の作詞作曲を手掛けているので、これまで以上に自分たち自身もすごく納得できる１枚になりました。
——そして、それぞれがソロで歌う作品も収録されていますよね。
上里優：ふたりでやって楽しい部分、たとえばハモったりとかすることの気持ち良さとかありますけど、ひとりソロでやるというのは、自分がイメージしている事を最大限に、好きなように表現出来るという部分もあるので、それもまた良かったですね。
——表現する事について難しかったところとかありますか？
上里優：今回、チャゲ＆飛鳥さんの『LOVESONG』という曲をカバーで歌わせてもらったのですが、他のアーティストさんの曲をCDに収録するというのは本当に難しかったですね。
もうすでに完成された名曲を、どのように僕ら流に歌ったらいいのか。
仮のレコーディングから本番録りまで一週間の時間があったので、その間はオリジナルの歌は聴かないようにして、自分の歌い方ができるように、D-51らしさが出せるように試行錯誤しながら、いいものが出来上がっていったので良かったです。
——チャゲ＆飛鳥さんは同じレコード会社の先輩でもあり、ボーカル・デュオの先駆者でもありますよね。彼らの曲を歌い継いでみていかがでしたか。
吉田安英：カバー曲というとあまりにも原曲を崩して歌うケースとかもありますけど、オリジナルのいいところまで落としちゃったような歌い方にだけは絶対したくなくて。日本を代表するデュオの名曲なので、いいものに仕上げていきたいというのがありました。
今回、チャゲ＆飛鳥さんの曲を歌うきっかけとなった十川ともじさんという方がいて、その方は20年前にオリジナル曲の『LOVESONG』をアレンジされた方なんですね。
オリジナルのいいところは無くさずに、でも、D-51らしさをいっぱい足していきたいという話をして、作り上げていったんです。
いい経験をさせて頂きましたし、楽しかったですね。何より、オリジナル曲に携われてきた十川さんが「いいものが出来た」と一番喜んでくださったんですね。一緒に作り上げてきた方がそう言ってくださるのが僕らも嬉しかったですね。
——チャゲ＆飛鳥さんの名曲は数多くあった中、この一曲『LOVESONG』が選ばれたのは？
吉田安英：例えば、D-51の雰囲気で合うのがアップテンポな『YAH YAH YAH』とか、いろんな案がありました。
でも『YAH YAH YAH』は、チャゲ＆飛鳥さんしか歌えないと思うんです。ではどの曲がいいかと関係者みんなで話し合う中で『LOVESONG』はどうだろうかという意見が出たんですよ。
『LOVESONG』という曲は、決してアップテンポでは無いし、スローなバラードでも無く、ミディアムテンポなのが、今回のほかの作品群と合っていたのと、僕らが歌ったらすごく面白いものが出来るだろうなと思えるような歌だったのです。
——そのほか、オリジナルのラブソングがいくつもこのアルバムに収録されていますよね。実体験に基づいた歌なのですか？
吉田安英：基本はそうですね。自分で経験したり日常からヒントを得て歌詞を書いたりしています。例えば友達の話を聞いたりしながら、落ち込んでいるやつ(友)に応援歌を作ってあげたくなるというか、そういったところから音楽を生み出すというか、それが自然体で、また等身大に共感してもらえる曲が出来るというか。それが今現実に生きている人たちに必ず届くと思っています。
上里優：実体験ということでは、僕は沖縄を離れて今東京に暮らしているんですけど、知らない土地で生活している事の心情などが、やっちゃんの歌詞とも共感できて表現しているところはありますね。
今回は１曲１曲が、みんなのストーリーとも合うような作品が出来たかなと思いますね。
吉田安英：曲の数だけストーリーがあって、並べてみると、小説の章が14章あって、それが一冊になっているような感じですね。
——なるほど！ それではこの一冊のアルバムを“Daisy”(デイジー)と名付けたのは？
吉田安英：タイトルのことで、英語の辞書で、D-51の“D”の項目から開いて眺めていた時に、“Daisy”という単語がありました。それが花の名前だとはわかっていたんですけど、その花言葉には「希望」「胸に秘めた愛」「無邪気」という意味があって、また原語に“Days Eye”とあって、「陽の目」「目に見える光」とかそういう意味合いがあるとのことで、今回作ったアルバムの曲にぴったりだし、“人間らしい花だな”と思えたんですね。そのタイトルが決まってから、１曲目に同名のオープニング曲を作りました。曲を並べるだけでなくて、先ほどの小説に例えるなら“はじめに”や“まえがき”のようなものですね。
フルコーラスでなくても、30秒くらいだけでも“この曲でこのアルバムがはじまるよ”、みたいな表現ができたらいいよなっていう話をしていて、だったらそのDaisyという曲を作ろうと、アカペラで表現してみました。
——素敵な切り口ですよね。
先ほど、インタビューの中で“宝物”という言葉が出てきましたが、歌詞にも宝物を表す“プレジャー”という歌詞も出てきますが(５曲目『and i love you』)、おふたりにとって“プレジャー(宝物)”とは。
吉田安英：最近思う事があって、このアルバムでも言いたかったのは、“自分の人生の中で自分が主人公でいなければいけないよ”という事を言いたくて、それぞれひとりひとりが、そして自分自身もまた宝物だなとも思うんですよ。だから自分の場合も含めて、“自分を信じてあげたい”ですね。
“自分を大切に出来れば、まわりも大切に出来る”と思うんです。
上里優：今まで出会った人たちが“宝”ですね。D-51になってから携わった人たちはもちろん、それ以前からいろいろと助けてくれた仲間とか友達とか、親とか。そこがあったから、ここまで来られたんだと思う。
——これからD-51が目指していきたいところは。
吉田安英：５年の節目を越えて、今回はある意味、新しいD-51のはじまりでもあるので、そのスタートにいいアルバムが出来たと思うので。だからといって100%満足している訳ではなくて、満足しきっていないところにまた“さらに先を目指したい”というのがあるんで。これからもどんどん作り続け、歌い続けていきたいと思います。——昨年のベストアルバムが総決算で、オリジナル作品を多く収録した今作が新しいD-51のスタートでもあるということですね。
上里優：今回自信作が出来たと思っていますし、そして初のホールツアーもはじまるという事で、気合い入れて歌っていきたいと思います。
